You are right to be cautious. While many people start small 
businesses and there is nothing you can't solve, there are a number 
of dangers if you're not well informed. A little knowledge in the 
beginning can prevent big problems later.

- Contact SCORE, a non-profit organization which links retired execs 
with small businesses.

- Contact the US Small Business Administration (SBA) and ask for 
booklets and such. I think they also have and advice program.

- Look at www.ivanhoffman.com for lots of legal pointers.

- Ask your local business license authority for pointers to local 
sources of stratup advice.

- Nolo press has terrific books and online resources. http://www.nolo.com/
